Science and Nature Studies at Princeton Preparatory Schools

A Living Laboratory of Curiosity, Care, and Discovery

At Princeton Preparatory Schools in Nairobi, our on-campus Science and Nature Studies Program invites students into a world of hands-on, inquiry-based learning inspired by the rhythms of the natural environment. Princeton Prep offers children a rare and meaningful opportunity to learn through direct experiences with living creatures and gardening in our school garden, deepening their understanding of science, empathy, and their responsibility to care for the world around them.

Meet some of our nature friends

A Sanctuary for Animals, A Sanctuary for Learning

Our carefully designed outdoor sanctuary is home to a variety of child-friendly animals that inspire joy, curiosity, and care. Students interact daily with:

  • 22 birds, including budgies, doves, Indian and American fantails, capuchins, and jacobins

  • 4 calm, gentle bunnies

  • 16 soft-feathered Silkie and Polish chickens

  • 2 furry dogs that are cage free and are in and out of the classrooms

Through their relationships with these animals, children develop not only scientific knowledge but also a sense of responsibility, compassion, and mindfulness.

Learning by Doing, the Montessori Way

The children don’t just observe, they participate meaningfully in the life of the sanctuary. Each day, students:

  • Collect eggs and explore life cycles and sustainable food systems

  • Feed and care for the animals, learning about diets, needs, and interdependence

  • Clean the aviaries, rabbit habitat, and chicken coop, practicing real-life skills such as responsibility, hygiene, order, and stewardship

  • Observe animal behavior, journal findings, and ask scientific questions

These practical experiences are essential to the Montessori philosophy, where hands-on work builds independence, coordination, confidence, and respect for all living things.

A Holistic and Inclusive Approach

Our Science and Nature Studies program is intentionally inclusive, designed to meet the needs of all learners, including neurodivergent children and those who benefit from multi-sensory, movement-based, and emotionally grounding experiences. Working with animals and nature provides:

  • Calming sensory input for all students

  • Structured, purposeful tasks for those with attention challenges

  • A predictable, nurturing environment for learners

  • Confidence building leadership opportunities for older students

At Princeton, every child is seen, supported, and celebrated.

Education that Connects Head, Heart and Hands

Through this living science lab, our students explore topics such as:

  • Animal care, classification, and adaptation

  • Ecology, life cycles, and food webs

  • Sustainability and ethical stewardship

  • Genetics, evolution, and biodiversity

  • Practical life skills that extend beyond the classroom

Our program nurtures scientific thinkers, kind caretakers, and engaged global citizens—children who understand not just how the world works, but why it’s worth protecting.

A Place Parents Love, and Children Never Forget

At Princeton Prep, nature isn’t just part of the curriculum, it’s part of our identity. We believe that children learn best when their minds are challenged, their hearts are engaged, and their hands are at work. Our Science and Nature Studies program gives students the rare and beautiful gift of growing up close to animals, close to the earth, and close to themselves.

Come discover a school where science is lived, nature is loved, and every child thrives.
